I was eating in this Taco Bell near campus back in 1986...

By not asking them annoying introspective questions.

So you made friends by not doing something?

A bad attempt on my part obviously.

How was the sushi?

Not the best in town, but certainly the most plentiful. ;-)

It's Sushi.come (Don't blame me, I didn't name it) and it's not far. But they only do the all-you-can-eat thing on Sundays from 11:30-2:30.

That's OK

I could do it UCON Sunday instead of dim sum.

Is it otherwise inexpensive?

"What's SCMODS?" Jim asked.

I shrugged, "State, County, Municipal, Offender Data System."

I assuming you mean friends on Live Journal. I only have one who is on Live Journal (the rest just visit and send their comments back on facebook).

I met her at Valleycon, many, many years ago before she became infamous... er famous.

Friends in general actually.

Friends in general... I meet people (named dave) where I worked who introduced me to other friends (some of whom were named dave) and dragged me off to the 1983 Worldcon in Baltimore, thereby introducing me to the concept of sf cons. At s/f cons I met other people with similar interests who became friends. Visiting them in the homes or local cons got me to meet more friends till it got to be a bit much and I gafiated. I also got to meet the children of my friends, some whom became friends when they became adults. The possibilty now exist for the grandchildren of one of my original friends to become my friends. It is all good even if no one names their children dave anymore. I have started, very slowly, to get back in touch with old fannish friends though I suspect I will never be a fan again.

The remainder of my friends are either ex-girl friends and their signifigant others or are friends of my wife.

Dumb luck. A couple cons. LJ.

My friends group expanded enormously when I hit LJ, but things really took off after I met a couple of 'nexus' people -- people who seem to know everyone, and who excel at introducing people and arranging get-togethers. That's when I started meetng more people in the flesh, and getting to know them better.

Making friends does seem to be a very random activity.

I am guessing you mean "meatspace" friends... some of them are from school or the army, or friends of friends, or Livejournal (i.e. people I friended first here and then met in person later). All in all, met kind of randomly. But what makes and keeps friends is common interests, and give-and-take.

I've made a lot of friends through school and work, and I'm good at maintaining friendships-- some of which go back to when I was 8 or 9 years old.

Here in Atlanta I've made friends through doing the geeky things I like to do and finding people who have the same interests (gaming, LARP, Dragon*Con, SF/F clubs and bookstores). I also have friends from work and have made friends through my husband's work.

I try to keep in touch with at least one friend I make from every stage in my life. School, high school, university, work, military, hobbies etc.

Current friend set? Mostly through SF social events -- conventions, and before that, Ottawa fannish parties (Who Cares) -- either directly, or cascaded off people met through SF cons. A few (including my sweetie) through poly get-togethers. I'm still in contact with on high school friend. I'm still in contact with one university friend, though he did cons as well.
