Torcon Early Thoughts
Torcon went pretty much as I expected.
Programming ops wise tammylc had warned me much was to be done before I got there so no surprises. I ended up designing the intitial layout of the grid and in doing so made a rough sketch map of the convention centre that become very popular due to the teeny tiny print on the pocket program map.
Life in the pogram ops bunker under the stairs ws a real grind for the first few days but we managed to get everything done in time to do some serious partying.
I also found out shift supervisors not scheduled on the desk get to do the same job off the desk. Its also a great way to eet interesting people. Finally find out where the SFWA suite is because people expect you to know.
The parties were great esp. the high tech gadgets of LA 06 versus the hot jazz of KC 06.
The best for overall theme was the Japan 07 party that provided a lot of atmosphere with interesting snacks and alchohol. Its high lite was the toast to a beaming Rob Sawyer whose happy face could have lit up the city during the black out. They also gave away Japanese language editions of various SF novels.
Ad Astra seemed to have decided to run their con at worldcon this year based on the number of people who showed up for their party. They had free books and a full range of refreshments.
Well more to comme later.
