Birthday meme
Done mainly because I am a history geek and want people to learn more about history.
Go to Wikipedia (http://www.wikipedia.org/). Type in your birth date (but not year). List three events that happened on your birthday. List two important birthdays and one interesting death. Post this in your journal.
Events:
1791 - Long-distance communication speeds up with the unveiling of a semaphore machine in Paris, this was the start of things that lead to the Internet we have now.
1836 - Texas Revolution: Declaration of independence of the Republic of Texas from Mexico. Texas and I have the same birthday, this also lead to the US's war with Mexico in 1846 which saw the acquisition of California, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico plus parts of Colorado. This and Texas made the US an oil power.
1931 - Mikhail Gorbachev, Leader of the Soviet Union from 1985 until 1991, President of the Soviet Union, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. The man who brought down the Iron Curtain and the Soviet Union and freed Eastern Europe and Central Asia. He really mixed things up and they are still settling down.
Births:
1793 - Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas (d. 1863) Founder of Texas has same birthday as Texas. Also fought to have slavery in the US abolished and tried to prevent the Civil War.
1904 - Dr. Seuss, American author (d. 1991) The author who had the most influence on my childhood.
Deaths:
1791 - John Wesley, English founder of Methodism (b. 1703) Founder of the Church I was raised in, in the form of the United Church of Canada, whose Sunday School taught me much of what I know about morality.
