Don was a captain in the United States Army.

Captain William Scully USN and Dana's Father on "The X-Files"
Major them Lieutenant General Hammond USAF on "Stargate" and "Stargate Atlantis"

I notice he was promoted ever time he appeared and that he earned a PHD in theatre from Southern Illinois State University.
