The Winner: Hellboy!
Hellboy seems to have been the movie of choice for me and my livejournal friends.
I really enjoyed it has many different things going on.
We have dealing with having super powers, death, love and new friendships. I also liked the throw away references like "Hitler finally died in 1958" and that fact that one of the characters was raised by his grandfather. Social isolation is definitely a theme.
I also though the effects kicked ass big time.
Finally the acting was very good. Ron was strong and vulnerable and funny as Hellboy, Selma Blair gave a similar performance as Elizabeth Fletcher. John tries to act as her protector but in the end she saves the day herself. The undead Nazi assassin was just weird but in a good way.
Needless to say preceding the movie with Thai food added to the evening.
