One of the biggest changes from when I was a kid is illustrated by this article:

Checking Google maps I used to walk about 1 km. to school everyday or the local store until age 8 and when I was older I used to walk about 2 km. to get to the beach or the local woods and finally to get to our downtown about 6 km for which I either took my bike or took the bus.
