Mike Glicksohn succumbed to cancer early morning Friday March 18th, 2001.

I met Mike in Southfield MI even though both of us were Canadians at the time. I found we both liked the fun of conventions and the beer. Later I was to learn that Mike was a big name in fandom and also someone who also was a volunteer at Ad Astra the Toronto SF con at the time. This inspired me to volunteer too, because if Mike the big name fan did it then it must be something one should do. I am still doing it 24 years later, even when I shouldn't be for health reasons so I guess I enjoy it.

Mike always had stories about something that were interesting to listen to. He also tutored Sf fans in probability mathematics in the form of poker games and I was lucky enough to receive a lesson from him one summer in Louisville. The prime result was that I learned I am not a poker player.

Mainly Mike gave my favourite convention COnFusion gravitas. He had attended the first convention run by the Stilyagi Air Corps and had been ConFusion's first Fan Guest of Honour and had been a part of every ConFusion since mainly by hosting the Fan Guest of Honour Introductions. I think this had started as part of the banquet we no longer have but by the time I started coming had become its own event at 5 PM on Saturday afternoon and sort of a induction ceremony where past Fan GOH's talk about themselves and how they became Fan GOH's.

I will miss Mike because up until this year he had always been there to tell me how we did compared to those legendary early days when giants walked in fandom.

The following is a video Rick Lieder made for Mike when he found out that Mike would be unable to make it this year:
