From the Port Huron TImes Herald:

ANN ARBOR — The flagship Borders bookstore has sold its final remnants and closed its doors for the last time.

The 37,000-square-foot store in downtown Ann Arbor shut down about noon Monday. Traffic was light on the final day, which ended early after a single buyer showed up and bought everything left.

Tom and Louis Borders founded the book retailer in Arbor in 1971, and it grew to hundreds of stores nationwide. But the company ran into financial trouble after failing to adjust to the shift to digital books and online music shopping.

More here:

I wonder who the last customer was?  I can remember going to the old downtown location for the first time.  I had been to the World's Biggest Book Store in Torono but Borders was more eclectic and had more more atmosphere.  I will miss the Borders of the 1990's and even to the end the chain seemed to have a better collection than Barnes and Noble and both are easier to bowse than Amazon.
