The research into lynchings in the American South finds that 50% were used to obtain the holdings of well off black men at a pittance. Usually the lyncher was a poor white relative of a rich local person.
I was struck by the similarity to the situation in Rwanda and Kenya where poorer people attack richer people to obtain their land.
