Three things I have done that you probably have not:

1. Fought a forest fire, at the age of 17.

2. Chopped down trees with a Sandvik, unusual because most people use a chain saw.

3. Gone simulated zero gee in a Turbo Beaver.

Ya gotta love the old Ontario Junior Ranger Program for giving one unique life experiences.

If anyone has done one of these I have to change it. 2. was axe is now Sandvik.

2 - I've done that. It was a smallish tree, but still ...

Was it more than one?

I did say trees, I was doing it for several days.

Hon, I spent a large section of my youth on a farm. Yes - many more than one tree. I was too young to use the chain saw.

OK, I switched to a Sandvik, very useful on softwoods like poplars.

BTW - did you just change the entry a bit to say Sandvik instead of ax?

Yes, if someone has done it you have to change it.

I fought a forest fire as a kid... not sure how young, but probably in the 13-14 range. (I'd have to ask my parents what year that fire actually happened.)

I will use my "at age 17" escape clause on that one.

What sort of equipment did you use?

We used shovels and water backpacks by the time I got up to the fire.

I was doing bucket-brigade from the lake. (This was near my parents' cottage.) We had some pumps for watering gardens & their hoses, as well as a firepump & hose. Eventually, the local (Poltimore) fire truck arrived and started throwing some more serious water at it.

I remember you telling us about it, I had not realized how young you were at the time.

We were using a Canso PBY filled with retardant on ours.

Ah yes, with Rex Hagon and Susan Conway later hosts of "Drop-In", Graydon Gould of "Supercar" fame, John Vernon of "Animal House", and Gordon Pinsent who has done a few things since then.(;

Of course they were "The Forest Rangers" and we were "The Junior Rangers" and did nothave our own TV show and luckily were never visited by Mounties on a regular basis. Some of us did meet a few OPP though.
