Interesting.
Right now we have the best of both worlds, as many online papers etc. I have found cite as sources books, made of real paper sitting on real shelves, that I can search out later as it's likely they will never be scanned.
Within a few years this will be a thing of the past, as online papers turn more and more to online sources for research.

I think another factor to consider is that full text articles tend to get used more because its easier to read/print them than go to a library and get the print version or get it from inter-library loan. If some vendor ever gets a monopoly (or near monopoly) on college research databases, then I think you would see even more narrowing.
