Apparently Canadians engaged to Americans, on a business visa and anybody not a Canadian entering from Canada will have to carry an electronic tag if they want to enter the US.

Another reason to not bother dating Americans.

Is it a uniquely American problem to be so very embarrassed by your country on a regular basis?

I don't know - I think if you fell in love and got engaged to an American, you might be willing to put up with an RFID tag. I expect it makes it less likely that you'd be turned back as a risk for overstaying - Eric and I never admitted to being more than friends before we got married, for fear of my not being allowed in.

So your take is its about tracking people who are likely to overstay?

Still the Big Brother aspect makes me wary, an increasing lack of privacy.

In terms of which Canadians they're choosing to track, yes, I think it's about risk to overstay.

And yeah, I don't like Big Brother either, but I think you need to weigh the loss of privacy against your lament about your love life before you rule out dating American women.
