What do you call the period from Christmas to New Years?

Do you often book these days off work?

Do you get any work done during this period?

Its a time of year that students are home from school and many people are traveling.

It was the subject of a movie by Whit Stillman called "Metropolitan," which I highly recommend by the way. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100142/

At my work we are often busy as when you have time off and nothing to do many students head to the library.

It is a first time in several years, when I in the office between Christmas and New Year. Only few people are in the office, and instead of relaxing time, we have been working very hard, dealing with various issues.

Work gives me the period off, so booking it off has never been an issue.

I get no work done.

One day of it, I call "brithday". The rest, I call "Christmas holidays".

Wow, this is the earliest I've ever been wished an early happy birthday. You're about 364 days and 21 hours early. Amazing. :)

Thank you.

I try not to be a slacker. I keep on top of these things and do it promptly. :)

I think I still need to give you a birthday hug for the occurrence in 2006. :)

In Sweden everyone calls the days "mellandagarna" which means "The Middle Days" or "The Days Between". I've never done much regular work those days - when teaching the days are off and otherwise it mainly has been record-keeping and financial stuff. And sales and fireworks-purchasing. The new year, work wise, generally does not start until after January 6 for the education sector.

It is common for people to travel after Christmas (or already at Christmas) and up to January 6. The large Swedish casualties in the tsunami two years ago was because of the dark season exodus.

  1. The interfestive hiatus.
  2. No, because (a) everyone else does, and they usually have more seniority, and (b) I've already used up all my vacation days for cons long before then.
  3. Yeah, I suppose so, if I'm not tied up waiting for someone who's on the critical path to get back from vacation.

The time between Christmas and New Year's, traditionally, is, well, Christmas; or rather, part of it. Christmas is supposed to start midnight Christmas Eve, and last until Twelfth Night (January 6th). Hence, the Twelve Days of.

Except that we now have some much Christmas crap, starting from midnight on All Saints' Day, that by noon on Christmas Day we are begging for it just to be over.

Holidaze!

I wish more people here paid attention to the whole 12 days of Christmas thing. Because Twelfth Night is my birthday! Woohoo! But everyone is worn out from the whole Holidaze thing since the department stores start Christmas in September, plus everyone is broke, too. I've never had a birthday party. Woe is me. On the brighter side, my birthday is on Saturday this year, so I won't have to go to work! Yay!
