Movies Viewed #1: "The Children of Men"
Spoiler Cut:
An eclectic mix of "The Chrysalids", "V for Vendetta" the movie, "The Handmaid's Tale" and "Black Hawk Down."
"The Chrysalids" because the novel its based on is also a dystopian post holocaust novel written about the same time about a chosen, special person fleeing the authorities.
"V for Vendetta" the movie because the setting, a totalitarian survivor state based on Great Britain, is very similar.
"The Handmaid's Tale" because both share a common theme the infertility of women in the near future and how society reacts.
Finally "Black Hawk Down" because the end of the movie has some great modern urban action scenes that show the confusion and violence of modern urban warfare.
Director Alfonso Cuarón, who also directed "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," "Y tu mamá también" and "Great Expectations" among others, uses nuance to show characters emotions, actions rather than dialogue, and the whole film has a washed out grittiness to give the feeling of loss in a barren future.
I will be putting this movie on my Hugo nominee list and I expect it will garner some Oscar Nominations as well, Picture, Director and best supporting actor for Michael Caine probably.
