The battle was 90 years ago this month. It was a victory that cost 5,000 casualties, fought in mud so deep it swallowed horse, against machine guns housed in concrete bunkers and yet the Canadians achieved all their objectives, at the exact cost in men predicted by their commander General Arthur Currie. Currie estimated that the Canadian forces would suffer 16,000 casualties in the taking of Passchendaele, an estimation that turned out to be accurate (the Canadian forces suffered 15,654 casualties).
The movie is due out next year.
