I should have mentioned Tanya Huff although I have yet to get into the Valour books I have read her horror detective and some urban fantasy.

I also have read Jo Walton's Farthing and have Ha'penny on order.

Steve Silver gave me a laundry list but without description:

Kage Baker I have read the short stories but the novels are not engaging me
Elizabeth Bear
Sheila Finch
Eileen Gunn
Kay Kenyon
Nancy Kress have read her and she has not held my attention
Louise Marley
Susan R. Matthews
Syne Mitchell
Elizabeth Moon tried one and could not get into it
Lyda Morehouse
Pat Murphy
Rebecca Ore
Kit Reed
Justina Robson
C.J. Ryan
Kristine Smith
Wen Spencer
Steph Swainston
Karen Traviss
Liz Williams

What would I like about these authors if I like space opera/adventure and cyberpunk?

I have Kathleen Ann Goonan and Sandra McDonald sitting on my to be read shelf.
There was one Australian author I liked she wrote of a female space station commander whose station was under siege, who traveled back in time in the second book but I have not seen any since and cannot remember her name off hand.

Kristine Smith's five Jani Killian books I suppose you could describe as a sort of first contact adventure/military sf, though much less the moment of first contact but what comes in the first few decades following it.

Wen Spencer writes more contemporary science fiction, but with definite space opera-ish underpinnings.

Which of Elizabeth Moon's novels did you try? If it was Remnant Population, which was her award nominee, the rest are very different.

I think you might like Justina Robson. I don't know what she has written, other than Keeping It Real, and I can't wholeheartedly recommend that yet as I'm only about 30 pages into it myself. But there's cyborgs and elves, and it's interesting.

Try Kay Kenton's Bright of the Sky and Mary Rosenblum's Horizons.
