Wiscon

Does anyone know when and how Wiscon went from being a small con for for fans and writers of science fiction about women to a must attend convention for the younger writer, esp. those who write for online publication and who write paranormal fantasy?

Well, I've been going to Wiscon for 23 of the 32 years it's been running. I can't tell you the "how" but the "when" seems to be around the last decade or so. Wiscon was founded by people with profoundly liberal and feminist leanings, and many of those people are still involved today.

You should attend a Wiscon and find out for yourself! Or join the [livejournal.com profile] wiscon community here (due to a vicious, nasty troll at the last Wiscon, only community members may post and comment) and pose your questions.

I already joined, I should check and see if there is one for Readercon too.

Wiscon is just over the edge for me travel time wise, from Sarnia, Chicago is 7 hours away which is not too bad but Wiscon is another hour or so which makes for a very long day of driving on a holiday weekend. I had considered it in the past when the GOH was one of my favourite authors but the timing never worked out.
