From his website:

"Leo Frankowski was widely known for the popular Adventures of Conrad Stargard series, which has gone through seven novels, with translated editions in Italy, Spain, and Poland. He wrote fourteen successful science fiction novels.

Following the publication of his first novel, he was nominated for the John W. Campbell award for best new writer.

Before he began writing, he held more than a hundred different positions, ranging from scientist in an electro-optical research lab, to chief engineer, to company president. His work in chemical and optical instrumentation earned him several patents. In addition, his wide technical expertise showed in his science fiction, which lent a strong sense of realism to his writing.

After marrying and subsequently divorcing a Russian, he moved back to the United States to complete his work on the final Conrad Stargard novel.

Unfortunately, he will not complete it. On 25 December 2008, Leo died.

For neither do men live nor die in vain.

We'll miss you, Leo -- you left a lasting impression on all of us."

Leo did panels at the first two ConFusions I did programming for and was a large figure in local SF fandom.

Sad news. This has not been a good year for SF writer survival.
