The CMOS battery on my old 1997 computer died.

Any suggestions on how to best replace it?

I think you should be able to just replace it with one from a computer parts store. You may have to pry it off the motherboard & re-solder it if it's the type that doesn't come off easily.

That said, I've never had to do this myself. ;) But I know they can be replaced.

The one time I've had to replace a CMOS battery, it was easily available at the local electonics store, Radio Shack.

I'd pull the battery and then call around to see who has one of the same type. The numbers should be on the back of it.

Good chances you've already done this, but I figured I'd offer help if you hadn't yet.

Problem

There is no obvious CMOS battery on the mother board.
