Tommy Douglas was a good choice.

I think Sir William Osler for making modern medicine and

Sir Arthur Currie for helping end World War One early and put us at the table at Versailles.

Osler was not even nominated while Currie was 24.

I agree that Don Cherry and Wayne Gretsky probably should not have been there.

I think Douglas was good choice from those who were there. What saddened me was the fact that no women made it to the final list, and were fairly under represented on the long list, too.

I think that is because women have only recently been allowed to have overt influence and be recognized for it.

Which women would you nominate?

in the face of a bush re-election, i hope this will help solidify our differences against an ever increasing republican america.

but as lists go, who's to say who's the best right? after all, it takes more than one person to help make a country. and i agree with the other commentor - more women!

I'm not sure that Barbara Gowdy really deserves to be on that list... I'm sure she's a fine author, but she's pretty quiet about it.

(Just don't tell her brother John I said that... he'd smack me upside the head, and he's a lot bigger than me. :) )

she's my favourite author, that's why i stuck her on there (although i do think she's more worthy than don cherry ) :)

i'm guessing you know her family personally? that's kinda cool. i met her once at a book signing, and she seemed very personable and kind.

I've never met her, but I've played bridge at the club I belong to and at local tournaments with her brother, who is one of the top players in Canada.

I agree with you ... sound choices. I also agree that Gretzky and Grapes should not have seriously been on the list... not that calibre of list anyway. Maybe Greatest Canadian Sports figures.

Do we know who won yet?

[livejournal.com profile] very_lost_boy and I suspected that Terry Fox would get it and that although Terry Fox WAS a model Canadian, did he really deserve it?

He had an impact but not as great as Tommy Douglas.

He is also someone most of us remember unlike Tommy who is now best know as Kiefer Sutherland's granddad.

I agree that Tommy Douglas was a good choice, and certainly my top pick out of the top ten. It's kind of interesting that a politician that has been out of the limelight for thirty or forty years, and mentioned only sporadically in the media for at least the last three decades would walk away with it.

But of the 100 original nominees, is there anyone who better demonstrated modern Canadian values?

Not too out of the limelight thanks to grandson Kiefer Sutherland.
